The Echoes of Rome

Writer's picture: Justin LeffewJustin Leffew

Ancient Rome, one of history's most powerful empires, didn't crumble in a day. Its decline was a complicated mix of internal strife, economic woes, and social disconnect. As we look around us today, parallels between the United States and Rome's twilight years become uncomfortably evident. Let's take a look:

Currency Devaluation: A Perilous Path

The denarius, Rome's currency, was once a symbol of stability. However, emperors facing budgetary constraints debased the currency, leading to runaway inflation and economic instability. Today, the United States grapples with ballooning national debt and a Federal Reserve that keeps "printing money". The result? A weakening dollar and concerns over long-term economic viability. How is your financial situation right now?

Distracted by Excess

In the later years in Rome, public focus shifted away from civic responsibility toward indulgences like gladiatorial games and extravagant feasts. Today, America is similarly addicted to distractions, from social media to tv, that divert attention from the most important issues like what our goals are and how to best accomplish them with the resources we have.

Overreach

Rome spread itself too thin, managing vast territories that became increasingly hard to govern and protect. America’s military and political entanglements across the globe echo this overextension, stretching resources and distracting focus from domestic priorities. America has spent somewhere between $75 billion and $135 billion dollars on the Ukraine war while providing little assistance to it's own citizens in need. Both theft and homelessness are rampant in many US cities. Illegal immigrants are coming into the US in record numbers.

Disconnected Leadership

Roman emperors, wrapped in the trappings of power, grew disconnected from the citizens they were meant to serve. Similarly, a widening gap between the American public and its trust in leadership risks disillusionment, disengagement, or worse.
